About Uncarcerated
For Us. By Us. — A digital sanctuary and a strategic hub for justice-impacted individuals and their families.
Our Mission
The system was never built to help us; it was built to contain us. When you leave the system, you aren't given a map — you're given a circular path that often leads right back to where you started. Uncarcerated is our collective answer to that cycle.
This space is a digital sanctuary and a strategic hub. Whether you are justice-impacted yourself, or you have walked this path alongside a loved one, this is where we reclaim our narrative. We are building a community rooted in art, dialogue, and resource-sharing. We don't just talk about change; we organize to create it.
This space is built for US — the formerly incarcerated, the families waiting for a phone call, and the advocates tired of a system that cycles people through "links and locks."

Leigh Scott
Founder & Executive Director
I've spent nearly a decade of my life behind bars. I know the silence of the cell, but I also know the roar of a community finding its voice. Today, I use that experience — and my foundation in professional radio and filmmaking — to ensure our stories aren't just heard, but leveraged for systemic change.
I lead with heart, execute with excellence, and move with an unmatched work ethic to ensure that no member of our community is left behind.
My work is defined by the space between front-line advocacy and high-level strategy. Currently, as the Director of Community Engagement at Family Promise of Gainesville, I work to strengthen community ties and develop collaborative solutions to end family homelessness. As a Represent Justice Ambassador, I use digital storytelling and film to advocate for transformative policy change.
I've served on the front lines at GRACE Marketplace, helped co-found Links not Locks to bridge the gap between behavioral health and incarceration, and led initiatives as a board member for Released Reentry. But beyond the titles, I am a bridge-builder. I believe that strategic organization, when rooted in deep compassion, is the most powerful tool we have.
Uncarcerated is the culmination of that work — a platform to connect, create, and navigate the road to real freedom.
What We Believe
Growth Is Always Possible
No matter what someone has been through, they have the capacity to grow, to change, and to contribute to their community in meaningful ways.
Community Over Isolation
Isolation is the enemy of recovery. We build bridges between people so that no one faces the challenges of re-entry or incarceration alone.
Access Changes Everything
When people have access to the right resources at the right time — housing, legal aid, mental health, employment — outcomes transform.
This Space is Yours
We aren't waiting for the system to provide resources or validate our experiences. We are providing them for each other. Here is how you can help build this movement:
Become a Creator
If you are justice-impacted and have a story to tell, art to share, or a perspective that needs to be heard, join us. Write a blog, start a conversation on the message board, or submit your work for our podcast.

Welcome to Uncarcerated. This is a sanctuary for the "UN" — the unconventional, the underserved, and the undeniably resilient. We aren't just a website; we are a collective reimagining of what justice looks like when it's held in the hands of the people who have lived it.
To keep this space sacred and safe, we move by a specific set of UN-negotiables:
1. UN-Filtered Truth (The "No Credit to Captors" Rule)
We believe in the power of your story, but we refuse to gaslight our community.
- The Line: We do not accept narratives that credit incarceration for "saving" us or suggest that "locking people up" is a valid solution for human struggle.
- The Philosophy: While you may have found personal strength despite the walls, we will not give credit to our captors or the cages. We are here to reimagine systems, not justify them. If you found God, found sobriety, or found yourself, we celebrate your agency — not the state's intervention.
2. UN-Conditional Respect
The system thrives on division; we thrive on solidarity. We have zero tolerance for the "isms" that the carceral state uses to keep us small. Submissions will be rejected if they contain:
- Racism, Sexism, Misogyny, or Xenophobia: If your "freedom" requires the oppression of someone else, it isn't welcome here.
- Intolerance: We are a big tent. Whether you are currently inside, formerly incarcerated, or a loved one left behind, we move with radical empathy.
3. UN-Masking the System (Trauma-Informed Care)
We know that telling these stories can be heavy.
- Write for Release, Not Re-traumatization: Be raw, but be mindful. If your work contains heavy descriptions of violence or abuse, please include a brief Content Warning at the top. We want to witness your truth without triggering a brother or sister's survival response.
- Protect the Vulnerable: Do not include the real names of people currently incarcerated unless you have their express written consent. Their safety is our priority.
4. UN-Limited Expression
We aren't looking for "academic" writing or "polished" art.
- The Vibe: Use your real voice. If you speak in slang, speak in slang. If you paint in shadows, paint in shadows. Whether you are a poet, a podcaster, or a resource navigator, bring the version of yourself that the system tried to erase.
The "How-To" for Creators
- Submitting Art/Writing: Upload your files via the Creator Portal. Every piece is reviewed by someone who has "walked the yard" — we aren't here to censor you, just to ensure we are building a foundation of healing.
- Submitting Resources: If you are a Resource Navigator, please ensure the links and numbers you provide are active. We want to bridge the gap, not send our people into another "loop" of dead ends.
Remember: We are UN-carcerated. We are the architects of the new world. Let's build it with words that set us free.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Uncarcerated?
Uncarcerated is a digital sanctuary and strategic hub for justice-impacted individuals and their families. Built for us, by us. We provide personalized resource matching, community discussion forums, a creative platform (UnStudio), and educational content — all built to help people navigate life during and after incarceration.
Who can use Uncarcerated?
Everyone. Our resources are available to currently incarcerated individuals, formerly incarcerated people, family members, advocates, social workers, and anyone interested in supporting justice-impacted communities. Browsing resources, discussions, and creative content requires no account. Creating content and participating in discussions requires a free account.
Is it free?
Yes. Creating an account, accessing resources, browsing discussions, and using the Re-Entry Toolkit are completely free. The only paid items on the site are creator content on UnStudio, where independent creators set their own prices for their art, writing, music, and more.
What resources do you offer?
We match users with resources across housing, employment, legal aid, mental health, substance abuse treatment, education, family support, and government benefits. Our intake form remembers your answers so you never have to re-enter information. Resources are tailored by state, with Florida being our most comprehensive coverage area.
What is UnStudio?
UnStudio is a creative marketplace where incarcerated and formerly incarcerated individuals can share and sell their work — writing, poetry, visual art, music, podcasts, and video. Every creator gets their own digital booth. Uncarcerated takes no platform percentage; all earnings go directly to the creator.
How can I support Uncarcerated?
You can donate to help fund our mission, volunteer your skills (mentoring, content creation, tech support), or simply spread the word. If you're an organization interested in partnering with us, reach out at info@uncarcerated.org.
I'm currently incarcerated. Can I still use the site?
We've designed key pages (especially Know Your Rights and the Re-Entry Toolkit) to be as accessible as possible, including mobile-optimized layouts for tablet access common in facilities. If you have limited internet access, a family member or advocate can use our intake form on your behalf and print a summary of resources for you.
Is my information private?
Absolutely. We never share your personal information. Intake form responses are stored securely (in your browser for guests, in our encrypted database for registered users). In community discussions, you choose a public username — your real name is never displayed. See our Privacy Policy for full details.
Be Part of the Change
Every person who joins, every resource shared, every story told brings us closer to a world where incarceration doesn't define a person's future.
