Cookie Policy
Exactly what we store on your device, and why. No tracking, no ads, no selling your data.

How we use cookies
Uncarcerated is a nonprofit built for justice-impacted people, so we take a deliberately minimal approach to data. We use only the small number of cookies needed to keep the Site working and to remember your choices. We do not run analytics, advertising, or cross-site tracking, and we never sell or share your data with advertisers. This page lists every cookie we set and why. It works alongside our Privacy Policy.
Your choices
When you first visit, a banner lets you choose what we may use. There are two categories:
- Essential — always on. These keep you signed in, protect you from cross-site request forgery, remember your language, and remember this cookie choice. The Site cannot function without them, so they are not optional.
- Analytics — off unless you turn it on. We do not currently run any analytics at all. This category exists so that if we ever add privacy-respecting, first-party analytics to understand how the Site is used, it will only ever run after you have explicitly allowed it — never by default.
You can change your choice at any time with the Cookie preferences link in the footer of every page, or by clearing cookies in your browser.
The cookies we set
| Cookie / Storage | Category | Purpose | Retention |
|---|---|---|---|
uncarcerated_session |
Essential | Keeps you signed in and carries your session, including the CSRF security token that protects forms. Clearing it signs you out. | Session (until you close the browser / sign out) |
cookie_consent |
Essential | Remembers your cookie choice (accepted or declined) so we don't ask again on every visit. |
1 year |
lang |
Essential | Remembers whether you're reading the Site in English or Spanish. | 1 year |
sticky_cta_dismissed |
Essential | Remembers that you dismissed the small "support us" donate prompt so it doesn't keep reappearing. | Session |
theme (local storage) |
Essential | Remembers whether you chose light, dark, or follow-system for the Site's appearance. | Until you clear it |
If you allow the Analytics category, a first-party analytics cookie may be added here in the future. As of this policy's effective date, no such cookie exists and none is set.
Third parties
We keep third-party code off our pages. The one exception is when you choose to make a donation: the payment itself is handled by Stripe, and you are taken to Stripe's secure checkout, where Stripe sets its own cookies on its domain for fraud prevention and to process the payment. Those cookies are governed by Stripe's Privacy Policy, not ours, and are only involved if you begin a donation. We embed the "Uncarcerated" podcast via links out to Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and Podbean — following those links takes you to their sites, which have their own cookie practices.
Managing cookies in your browser
You can clear or block cookies at any time through your browser's privacy settings. Blocking essential cookies will sign you out and may prevent parts of the Site from working. Because we set no tracking cookies, there is nothing here for "Do Not Track" or ad-blocking tools to remove.
Changes to this policy
If our cookie use ever changes, we'll update this page and its effective date. For questions about cookies or your privacy, contact us.
